‘From School to Surgery’ @ Manchester High School for Girls

MHSG students with an interest in Medicine were delighted to have the chance to explore the field of Surgery, a traditionally male-dominated profession.

The ‘From School to Surgery’ day was led by Scalpel, the University of Manchester’s Surgical Society. It enabled girls, from Year 11 and the Sixth Form, to experience practical skills and listen to advice from both medical students and doctors about joining this field.

Laura Herd (11M) said: “We participated in various activities including learning how to ‘scrub up’, discovering the essential first aid required to treat somebody with upper body limb injuries and finally, we were taught how to suture using the Surgeon’s Knot! It was both an interesting and enjoyable day, providing lots of food for thought.”

Hannah Chan (11S) added: “The university students were very helpful and gave us an honest and detailed account of what Medical School is really like.”
